प्रोस्टेट एक ग्रंथि होती है। जो सभी पुरुषों में मौजूद होती है। यह अखरोट के आकार की ग्रंथि होती है जो पेशाब की थैली (urinary bladder) के नीचे स्थित होती है। जो वीर्य (seminal fluid)बनता है और शुक्राणु (sperm) को पोषण प्रदान करता है। जब प्रोस्टेट ग्रंथि में कैंसर होता है तो इसका विकास धीमा और सीमित हो जाता है।और नजदीकी अंगो तक फ़ैल जाता है।
किस उम्र में हो सकता है प्रोस्टेट कैंसर का खतरा?
यह रोग 60 से 65 वर्ष से अधिक आयु के पुरुषों में होता है। लगभग 60% मामले 65 साल की उम्र से अधिक आयु के पुरुषों में पाए जाते हैं। हर 14 लोगों में से एक बुजुर्ग को यह बीमारी की आशंका रहती है।

- वृध्दावस्था– उम्र के साथ प्रोस्टेट कैंसर का खतरा बढ़ जाता है। यह 50 साल की उम्र के बाद सबसे आम है।
- जाति– अन्य जाति के लोगों की तुलना में ब्लैक लोगो को प्रॉस्टेट कैंसर का खतरा अधिक होता है। अश्वेत ब्लैक लोगों में प्रोस्टेट कैंसर के भी आक्रमक उन्नत (Aggressive) होने की संभावना अधिक होती है।
